Closing Clock Pivot Holes With Out Bushings

Prior to the almost universal use of using bushings clockmakers had a couple of other techniques they used to close worn clock pivot holes. One of the methods they used was with a punch. You take the plate and place it on an anvil and using a punch (place it on the worn side of the pivot hole) and give it a smart tap with a hammer. You continue this process until the arbor of the gear will not go back into the pivot. At that point you use a broach until the arbor fits nicely and waalllaa you are done. The other technique is by staking, I am not that familiar with this technique but I believe the process is pretty much the same. I have a book around here that goes over staking...
